Specialist leaders of education (SLEs) are outstanding middle and senior leaders who have the skills to support individuals or teams in other schools. They understand outstanding leadership practice in their area of expertise and are skilled in helping other leaders to achieve it in their own context. SLEs can support schools in a number of ways including the delivery of training, coaching advice and implementation of whole school initiatives.
The role of the SLE is to raise standards and improve the quality of school leadership through school-to-school support and peer-to-peer learning. This recognises the important role that senior and middle leaders play in improving schools and outcomes for children.
“We work with the Sutton Teaching School Alliance to give extra support to some of our teachers who are facing challenges in their progress towards gaining a PGCE. We value this service because of the expertise of the SLEs and their flexibility to our needs – including being deployed quickly and working with the other support roles involved. Working with SLEs is new for us and we have worked with the TSA to improve our process over the last year and a half and have found them to be a very willing partner in ensuring that the needs of our teachers and their pupils is met by the service. Spending two or more days with SLEs has had a big impact on these teachers and been an important factor in many of them addressing key barriers and achieving QTS.”
