History

'History is not the past but a map of the past, drawn from a particular point of view, to be useful to the modern traveller' - Henry Glassie, US Historian

Against the background of academic research and current educational agendas, trainees will be challenged to explore the very purpose, nature and importance of history teaching and its place in the National Curriculum today.  Through a combination of debate, discussion and reflection, sessions will provide the opportunity for trainees to develop their subject and pedagogical knowledge.  Trainees will refine their understanding of the key concepts, skills and processes which underpin successful history teaching, while also developing their awareness of a full range of planning approaches and teaching styles, enabling them to teach History in an innovative and challenging manner.  The course is led by highly experienced and successful History teachers, with the sharing of best practice a feature of every session.  Preparatory reading is provided and set to promote high level engagement with the issues explored in training sessions. In the course of their study, trainees will learn to teach History in a way that all pupils will find engaging, interesting and purposeful.
